2010's 10 Top Posts

Has it really been 2 years since I started blogging about my obsession with my dogs? My kids call me the "Crazy Dog Lady". I keep telling them, I find that a compliment!

The past year has been a learning curve in writing, a fun time meeting other dog enthusiasts, and an educational experience reading other blogs. Here's to our best of 2010, ranked by your page visits at Bark'n About.

Kodee's 4th Birthday!

Party! On December 3 we celebrated Miss Kodee's 4th Birthday! I promised Mom I'd be extra good. Really, I did try. It's just her present looked so yummy. Oh the shame, you'll see in the video below what happened.

First we want to thank Holly our blog friend for stopping by and remembering Kodee's birthday! Holly also turned 4 earlier this week so be sure to go wish her a Happy Birthday too!

Why Mom Why?!

Hey guys! I entered myself in a photo contest. It was titled "Dogs in Winter Coats". Seriously what was mom thinking! Dressing a dog in a parka! I will never live this down at the next dog event... oh the shame of it all! Take a peek at how silly I look!

Dogs We Meet On Our Hikes

Portuguese Water Dog. Don't You Just Love His Dirty Face!
As the name denotes, the Portuguese Water Dog developed in Portugal and is known there as Cao de Aqua (pronounced Kownd’ ahgwa), “dog of the water”.
~ Portuguese Water Dog Club of Canada
This Thursday, I am thankful for the many dog breeds I meet while out hiking. It's fun to get to know a breed I have not met before. Plus I enjoy any opportunity to fine tune my beginner photography skills.

Strolling along a path at the Rouge Park, in Scarborough, Ontario we were greeted by this large, friendly and off-leash dog trotting behind his owners. As we passed on the path, I raised my camera to take his picture. This big-eyed guy looked over his shoulder, stopped, turned around and posed.  As soon as he heard the camera "click" he happily set off after his owners again. It appears, being asked to stand while being photographed is a large part of his life! [Read More...]

Strattfordshire Dogs Come in 2's. How About Your CKCS Household?

I wonder if in the 18th century people already knew of a CKCS's desire to be in multiples? Upon getting Kodee, my breeder warned me, I'd get another. I scoffed. Not me, I have never owned more than one dog at a time. Yes, and I had also only owned Labrador Retrievers and one crazed Doberman. The Doberman is a whole nother story!

Backyard Breeders Beware!

I love my dogs and honestly can say I will NEVER be without one. Dogs give me companionship, comfort and laughter. Daily they give me a reason to get off my butt and exercise. Certainly they have inspired me to write, photograph and blurt out bits of my opinions here!

I figure, if you keep coming back here to read, you probably find my ramblings thought provoking and fun or maybe it's entertaining to watch me unload. It could be, you thrive on subjecting yourself to torture. Who am I to judge!

The ROYAList of Cavaliers; More Than a Pretty Face

Cavaliers King Charles Spaniels excel in so many ways. Most people think of them as "Lap Dogs". True, a Cavalier will always make itself at home on the nearest lap, but they are so much more! Don't forget they are also descendants of the Spaniel. True to their heritage, Cavaliers have an excellent sense of scent, they are quick on their toes, graceful movers who can whip up a zoom in a moments notice. People not really familiar with this breed, make the assumption they are low key, low energy, low motivated dogs. So NOT true! [Read More... ]

A Fall Excursion; Leaves, Feathers and My Gals

YA! Bring on those colourful leaves, cooler weather and day-trips! We had a really hot, long summer with temperatures over 30 Celsius most days.  That meant we had to curtail our long hikes. Becky turned one in June, so she hasn't perfected my stellar, easy going, walking stride. Becky has a walking style that brings to mind a freight train bombing down a hill without a driver. That combined with soaring temperatures meant we had to be careful outside. [Read More...]

Beating Canine Cancer

The Ugly:     1 in 4 dogs will die from cancer.
The Good:   50% if caught early are curable!

Cancer is on the rise in dogs. Odd as it seems, it's partially due to the fact our pets are living longer and healthier lives. Oncology drug development, pet owner health education on prevention and early detection, better breeder programs with attention to reduced inbreeding are some reasons.

Whitby Heritage Days

Last weekend we scurried to downtown Whitby for Heritage Day celebrations. Before I tell you about it, check out that poor dude in the photo to the left. Man was he stuffed! He didn't really have a lot to say and he smelled like the stuff thrown about a country vegetable garden. Becky was going to nibble on his pants. I told her to leave him be, he had enough worries. It was apparent his owners had tied him to a post and LEFT him!

The streets looked like an old fashioned farmers market. Mouth watering stuff folks; fresh baked goods, veggies, fruits, kettle popcorn, and honey. Becky and I love kids and today they were a pretty excited bunch while they explored the wagon tours, pony rides, railway trains, and crafts.

Paws Up for Autism Dog Services!

Autism%20logoAt least once a week we like to venture out to a new walking spot. Sometimes we make it a day-trip to explore new communities. Other times we take a mini exploration in our own community. We explored a new uncharted bike path (for us anyways) last summer in Oshawa.

It was along this path, terror stuck a Labrador retriever named Scotland, a service dog to an Autistic child this past month. Fortunately, Scotland was with an adult and the child was not present at the time. I can only imagine the fear Scotland and the adult walking him felt when they were suddenly attacked by the two dogs who had jumped over their backyard fence. To date, the owner of the dogs that attacked Scotland have not been found. Needless to say, it is my wish (along with many other residents), that they are and held responsible.

50% of dogs in University of Guelph's VSTEP program killed

University of Guelph's Ontario Veterinary College is dedicated to animal health care and a leader in North American Veterinary Colleges. That is why it's difficult to understand why the Veterinary Skills Training and Enhancement Program (VSTEP) is currently under fire by public scrutiny. In this program International Veterinary students are taught Canadian Veterinary criteria so they may practise here. The International students perform basic spays however these procedures were not supervised. The bottom line was numerous botched spays that resulted in ending 10 out of 20 animals lives.

EEK!! We have been away too long!! I am so sorry; really not much of an excuse but we have been spashing in water, running up hills, chasing raccoons (got it on camera), seeing great big Tall Ships (yes pictures to follow) and more. Woofstock 2010!

Last weekend the weather almost threatened to ruin our annual trip to the St. Lawrence Market in downtown Toronto! The rain gods blessed us and held off (on Sunday anyways - sorry to any suckers that went on Saturday :P ). Thank goodness as June 12 and 13, 2010 marked Woofstock Toronto! We left Kodee and Becky at home as it was a long drive, loads of dogs and selfishly I had shopping on my mind!

Pinecone Tales

Miss Kodee has an OBSESSION with pinecones. And at times *insert rolls eyes* she displays tiny little guarding issues over them.

FINALLY one day we sat her down and hammered out an agreement. Miss Kodee graciously trades her pinecone(s) for a treat... OK maybe 2 treats... well if its a tasty pinecone we might have to bargin up to 5 treats. This is the deal; she gets the treat(s) and we promise to post a memento photo here. Oh dear, we did warn you she is a "Princess" [Read More...]

Cavalier Fanciers of Southern Ontario

The last few months have been a blast of puppy fur flying, treats galore, mad dashes after laser lights and ohhh sweet boys! So where did I find such riveting action? Well, Mom and I have been attending handling classes with the Cavalier Fanciers of Southern Ontario (CFSO). Ha, that is Mom's version of the story. Reality is Mom drives us and then sits on a chair while my friend from Embee Cavaliers helps me learn to not be a freight train on a lead, to stand very still on a table and to flow when I walk! After all my registered name is "Dancing Queen! Boy, what I will do to get my lips on some good junk food.

Sheesh! Does Your Dog Yip Yap During Dog Movies!

Everyone has seen Hachi: A Dog's Tale, starring Richard Gere. I am probably the last to watch it. Why? Well, I can tell you, it was NOT lack of desire! It was pure fear.
